Broncos Courtland Sutton, Pat Surtain support CU star Travis Hunter’s bid for Heisman Trophy

Denver has bye in Week 14 before hosting Colts on Dec. 15 at Empower Field

Travis Hunter has a friend in the Denver Broncos.

The two-way Colorado Buffaloes football star is considered a frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy. Last week, before the Broncos-Browns kickoff at Empower Field, two Denver players showed love for the Buffs’ generational talent.

Wide receiver Courtland Sutton and cornerback Pat Surtain each warmed up in shirts with the phrase “HE12MAN” to support Hunter’s candidacy for the Heisman Trophy. Hunter is No. 12 for the Buffs.

The Heisman Trophy finalists will be announced Monday.

“It’s just really hard to take (the Heisman) away from a guy who has been dominant. Not just playing (on) both sides of the ball. But has been dominant on both sides of the ball,” Sutton told reporters after a 41-32 victory the Browns. “It’ll be a shame if the Heisman committee doesn’t take that into account. Not taking anything away from the other people who will be nominated. But it’s really hard to do what he’s been doing at a high level and knowing that teams are looking for him.”

TE production

The Broncos tight ends group has still produced in the absence of Greg Dulcich.

Their combination of Adam Trautman, Lucas Krull and Nate Adkins have accumulated 29 catches for 328 yards and three touchdowns so this season from rookie quarterback Bo Nix.

“The mentality is just whatever it takes to win,” Krull told The Denver Gazette. “We all have our roles. I think all of us play at an extremely high level, with unwavering effort and belief. … If you watch every weekend, you just see the type of leader and player that (Nix) is. He shows up every single Sunday and absolutely produces. He has unbelievable confidence.”

Denver waived Dulcich, a former third-round draft pick (2022), on Nov. 25 and was claimed by the New York Giants.

Briefly

The Broncos, as of late Saturday, were 4.5-point favorites over the Colts in their Week 15 matchup (per FanDuel). … RB Jaleel McLaughlin led Denver with 14 carries for 86 yards in a win over Cleveland. Coach Sean Payton said after the game: “He played well. We felt like some of the wide zone stuff and tosses were going to be good. He had a lot of good runs. Part of it was the scheme that was successful, or a couple of schemes we have seen other teams have success with that we had success with as well. All in all, it was good.”
