Jamal Murray battles illness, Thunder’s defense in Nuggets’ 119-107 win in Game 6

It was a sick game from Jamal Murray literally and figuratively Thursday at Ball Arena.

After starting the day listed as “questionable” with an illness for Denver’s 119-107 win in Game 6, Murray finished with 25 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and a blocked shot. There was an IV and fluids involved in Murray’s pregame preparation.

“That’s Jamal Murray. It’s almost like the worse it is, the better off it’s going to be,” Nuggets interim coach David Adelman said.

“What a tough-minded man.”

Adelman said he was finally confident at the team’s pregame meeting Murray could play, roughly 30 minutes before tipoff, when some color returned to his starting point guard’s face.

Murray said he was confident he could play after he tested negative for a few different illnesses Thursday morning. On his way to his post-game shower, a teammate yelled “flu game” in Murray’s direction.

“I was always going to play in my mind,” Murray said. “I’m glad we got the win, gave ourselves some life and a chance to win the series.”

The contributions were crucial to Denver’s win. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led all scorers with 32 points on 11-of-16 shooting. Chet Holmgren was Oklahoma City’s second-leading scorer with 19 points.

Nikola Jokic led the Nuggets with 29 points, 14 rebounds, eight assists, two steals and a block. Murray finished as Denver’s No. 2 scorer, while Christian Braun and Julian Strawther added 23 and 15 points, respectively.

Murray announced his intentions with a four-point play that got the Nuggets on the board in the first 2 minutes of the game.

“I kind of was watching the first 6 minutes like ‘Is this real? Can he do it?’” Adelman said.

“I thought he had good energy and good juice.”

By the end of the first quarter, Murray already accumulated 11 points, and a couple of assists. He made 4 of his first 5 shots.

“He opened the game really good for us,” Jokic said. “He set the tone. … When you play the game, I think you don’t think about what you have or whatever.”

The 28-year-old scored just two points in the second quarter, and Denver’s three-point lead after the first quarter turned into a three-point deficit at halftime. He got back to producing in the third quarter with nine points and four assists. That effort and Strawther’s eight points in the final 2 minutes of the third was vital to Denver starting the fourth quarter with an eight-point advantage.

Murray started the fourth quarter by hitting his second 3, a big part of Denver winning the four minutes Nikola Jokic rested by three points. The fatigue showed up in the form of a couple fourth-quarter turnovers, but Murray still had enough to block a shot in the final minute. He finished the game plus-28, which was 11 points better than

“Everything was kind of bothering me, but kind of once the game starts and the team needs you and adrenaline kicks in, a couple of shots go in or whatever, you just kind of suck it up and get through it,” Murray said.

There was a visible look of relief on Murray’s face when he was asked about having two more days to recover ahead of Sunday’s Game 7 in Oklahoma City.
