Three baby bison born at Rocky Mountain Arsenal over the weekend

Commerce City has some cute, new residents. Visitors can check them out this spring – just remember to give mamas and babies plenty of space

It’s calving season for the bison at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal.

The wildlife refuge announced on its Facebook page Sunday that volunteers and staff had spotted three bison calves over the course of two days.

Calving season begins for bison in mid-April and runs through early July, with many births in a herd concentrated over several weeks, according to the National Park Service.

Bison calves are born with a reddish-tan colored coat, making them easier to spot next to their mothers at the refuge. According to the National Parks Service, baby bison will nurse from their mothers within the first 10-30 minutes of being born and begin grazing on grass and drinking water within a week of being born.

The Rocky Mountain Arsenal encourages visitors who enjoy the bison to visit within the next few weeks to ensure they get to experience the calves before the season is over, and reminds visitors to ‘give mamas and their babies plenty of space!’
