Truck full of potatoes catches fire, shuts down C-470 in Jeffco

While it may be a little early for a Fourth of July barbecue, that didn’t stop a truck full of potatoes from roasting on C-470 Tuesday.

At about 9:20 p.m. Tuesday, a semitrailer hauling potatoes caught fire while driving on westbound C-470 between Highway 285 and Morrison Road. Several passing drivers spotted the flames and called 911.

The highway was shut down for two hours while firefighters responded to the blaze, according to West Metro Fire. A small grass fire was sparked by the truck fire, which was quickly contained by fire crews.

The truck driver was able to escape the impromptu oven safely and was not injured.

A video posted to X by West Metro Fire shows the truck engulfed in flames with potatoes spilling out onto the roadway.

Officials did not say how the fire is believed to have been started and did not comment on how the potatoes tasted.
