Annual gingerbread display debuts at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs

Santa has come to town — and he’s riding in a golf cart.

This is the scene of The Broadmoor’s annual life-size gingerbread display, which opened Wednesday in the festive main mezzanine at the five-star, internationally known hotel and resort on Colorado Springs’ southwest side.

Believed to date back to the 1960s, the gingerbread tradition has seen life-size trains, chapels, cars and last year’s canopy boat — displays honoring the historic hotel’s past and present. This season’s golf cart, driven by Santa’s caddying elf, honors the U.S. Senior Open Championship coming to the resort in June.

In a comment posted on The Broadmoor’s website, Vice President of Food and Beverage David Patterson said: “Creating the annual gingerbread display is one of our favorite holiday traditions. While the displays take months of preparation and planning, it’s a labor of love and an opportunity to get creative and highlight different aspects of the resort in a truly magical way.”

The magic is the result of engineering and baking precision overseen by Executive Pastry Chef Franck Labasse. Confectioners and carpenters spend hundreds of hours designing, baking and building the display of epic proportions and calories.

The latest creation finds Santa rolling on chocolatey wheels atop a chocolate and frosted bridge, spanning over a blue, sugary waterway. The gingerbread golf cart is adorned by macarons, gumdrops and mints. An elf is at the wheel of macarons, while other little helpers take putts on the green nearby.

The display’s opening announcement came with “a score card:”

• Hole 1 – 958 pounds of powdered sugar

• Hole 2 – 475 pounds of flour

• Hole 3 – 1,801 eggs

• Hole 4 – 19 pounds of holiday spices

• Hole 5 – 200 pounds of granulated sugar

• Hole 6 – 128 pounds of molasses

• Hole 7 – 6 pounds of salt

• Hole 8 – 164 pounds of dark chocolate

To accommodate people with room reservations and those without, The Broadmoor lists the following viewing dates for non-overnight guests: Dec. 16-Dec. 19.

The gingerbread display will be up through New Year’s Day.

The Broadmoor is owned by the Denver-based Anschutz Corp., whose Clarity Media Group owns The Gazette.
