Some people come to Colorado for the views, while others come seeking things that will give them a rush. If you’re looking for speed and thrills outside of the typical list of Colorado activities, there are plenty of unique ways to do it. Here are a few of our favorite stops around the state sure to get your heart pounding.

1. Tackle Telluride’s Via Ferrata

Wrapping around the mountains that surround Telluride, this “hike” will put you on small footholds above a drop of several hundred feet.
2. Free Fall on the Terror-Dactyl

The Terror-Dactyl at Colorado Springs’ Cave of the Winds Mountain Park is a giant canyon swing that blasts through Williams Canyon at speeds of over 100 miles per hour over a 200 foot drop.

3. Cruise on Glenwood Cavern’s Mountain Coaster
Unlike the normal roller coaster, you’re completely in control on this ride. Blast down 3,400 feet of track that covers 1,000 feet of elevation using handbrakes as you whip around hairpin turns.
4. Explore the Royal Gorge

Not only can you take a look off the highest bridge in America, there are several rides here to help you get your adrenaline fix. There’s a zip line that goes across the canyon, a swing that dangles you 1,200 feet above the Arkansas River, and a gondola that slowly crosses the gorge, giving riders 360° views of the canyon below.
5. White Knuckle It Up Pikes Peak Highway

Even if you’re used to driving on high altitude mountain roads, the Pikes Peak Highway can still be a rush. It’s so steep that at times it literally feels like you’re driving into the sky. Don’t worry too much about the dropoffs, just drive carefully and you’ll be fine.

6. Wrestle Gators in Mosca
A relatively cheap ticket gets you in the pit wrestling gators that range from two to eight feet long. The owners use these classes to make sure their gators are properly inspected for prior injuries sustained by other gators.
7. Get Spooked at the Stanley

If you’re looking to spook yourself out, the Stanley Hotel is the place to do it. The hotel was the inspiration behind Stephen King’s famous book, the Shining, and there’s a ghost tour here that takes you around the spookiest hallways and corridors on the property.

8. Ride Cliffside on the D&SNG

The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad might not be much of a rush until you look down. Then you’ll realize you’re on a tiny train track that carves through and around mountains on the edge of a cliff. It’s worth it though. You’ll see some of the prettiest views around.
9. Try Out Sandboarding in the Sand Dunes

As one of the coolest attractions in Colorado, this one tends to surprise people when they find out it’s here. Home to huge sand fields filled with dunes, the Great Sand Dunes National Park is the perfect place to try your hand at sandboarding.
10. Brave Black Bear Pass
Often called the most dangerous drive in the state, this Colorado mountain pass isn’t for the faint of heart. It consists of a series of uneven switchbacks and a serious grade: Black Bear Road is one drive that should be saved for only the most experienced Jeep drivers.
11. Cliff Jump Into Paradise Cove

What’s more of a rush than jumping off a cliff that’s taller than your house? Paradise Cove, also known as Guffey Cove, is the perfect place to cliff jump in Colorado. Jump at your own risk.
12. Meet Wild Things at the Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center

Ever want to kiss a wolf? If your answer is yes, the Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center is the perfect place to get close to these furry beasts.

13. Don Some Picks at Ouray Ice Park

Ice climbing isn’t something the average person gets to try. The gear is pricey and frozen waterfalls tend to be few and far between. That being said, the Ouray Ice Park is the perfect place to test it out if you want to give it a shot. Try it during the annual Ice Climbing Festival to get cheap rental equipment and some guidance.
