Vail is known for skiing, with the largest resort in the United States sprawling for miles into the mountains above town. In summer, folks hike and bike. This trail takes hikers from town to the summit of Vail Mountain, with 2,100 feet of climbing. It runs just over three miles, over wooden walkways and, until mid-summer, snow and mud, ending at the Eagle’s Nest, with bathrooms, drinking water and a gondola running back to town. The views of the Gore Range to the north are splendid throughout the hike, and the top offers a rare view of Mount of the Holy Cross, so remote it can’t be seen from any road. Catch your breath at the top and return the way you came, or have a drink or two at the mountaintop bar.
Pro Tips
Recommended season(s): Mid-summer – mid-fall.
