Vail is known for its world class skiing, but as anyone who’s ever hiked into the Gore Range from town will tell you, the hiking is not too bad either. This strenuous trail runs 4.1 miles, past an amazing waterfall, to gorgeous Booth Lake. Starting from Booth Creek Road in east Vail, the trail climbs steeply above the valley, reaching Booth Falls after two miles. This 60-foot waterfall is not to be missed, and many day hikers turn around here. Traffic thins past the falls as the trail winds through pine forests and the jagged spine of the Gores comes into view. The last quarter-mile is steep and rocky as you emerge above timberline and reach the lake, with cold blue waters ringed by dramatic 13,000-foot peaks. It’s 3,000 feet of elevation gain to reach the lake, so relax on the shore for a while before returning the way you came.
Pro Tips
Recommended season(s): Spring – fall (mid-summer – mid- fall for upper section).
