Things To Do

A hiker could spend a lifetime exploring the Holy Cross Wilderness, a vast and deep swath of mountains that feels like a different world from the Interstate 70 corridor just a few miles away. This is one of the shorter hikes in the wilderness, a 4.6-mile trek to a pretty lake that sits just barely within the wilderness boundaries. But with 2,800 feet of climbing, it is not for the beginner hiker. The hike starts right off U.S. Highway 24 in the town of Minturn. After a quarter-mile following a dirt road, the trail turns left to a junction with the West Grouse Creek Trail. Stay left and the trail soon rises through aspen, pine and spruce forests, and after 1.3 mile the climbing begins. The trail can be steep, though all the steepest sections are short, as it climbs high into an alpine basin and passes through a series of meadows at the four-mile point. The lake comes into view a short time later, with a view dominated by 12,799-foot Grouse Mountain. Follow one of the social trails around the lake or return the way you came.

Pro Tips

  • The trail crosses Grouse Creek a whopping six times, so be sure to bring water shoes or sandals, or better yet save this hike for mid-summer after water levels have gone down.
  • Backpackers will find limited camping around Grouse Lake, so choose a campsite below or above the lake. Campsites above the lake offer great views of Grouse Mountain.
  • The final section of trail to the lake enters the Holy Cross Wilderness, so only foot and horse travel are permitted and dogs must be leashed.
  • Recommended season(s): Mid-summer – fall.
