Things To Do

In the Mosquito Range above South Park is a trail that summits four 14,000 foot peaks in just over 7 miles, offering more 14er bang for your buck than any other stretch of trail in Colorado. Add to this the fact that anyone in a passenger car can drive to the trailhead at 12,000 feet and you have a classic Colorado above timberline experience. The trail, which most people hike clockwise, makes a loop around the aptly named Kite Lake.

Pro Tips

  • This is a long day so get an early start by camping at Kite Lake, which has a handful of non-reservable campsites. The entire area is above timberline so bring your own firewood.
  • Most people summit Mount Democrat first. Take stock of the weather and your food, water and energy level before continuing on as there is no easy bailout past here.
  • Don’t stray too far from the trail, especially on Mount Bross, as old mines and shafts litter the area.
  • Recommended season(s): Summer – early fall.
