How To Get Into Fishing
Fishing is a great activity for all ages and a way for families and friends to spend time together outdoors.
Follow these basic steps to get started (learn more about fishing in Colorado at the Parks and Wildlife website.)
1. Pick your fishing rod and reel
A closed-face spincast rod and reel are great for learning how to fish.
2. Choose your bait
Different species of fish have different appetites. Choose your bait based on what kind of fish are in the lake and what you are trying to catch. Look at the list of waters at the Colorado Parks and Wildlife website for additional bait restrictions.
3. Get your gear on
You need a few basic items to get started fishing.
4. Know your knot
There are lots of fishing knots. The Improved Clinch Knot is a good, basic knot to get you started.
5. Pick your spot
Fishing holes are located around the state. Check out your options by going online to cpw.state.co.us/fish/fishingatlas

BEFORE YOU GO
Before you head out on a fishing trip in Colorado, make sure everyone in your group of legal age has a valid state fishing license.
Annual licenses are valid April 1 to March 31.

What do I need to buy a fishing license?
Habitat Stamp
A habitat stamp is required for adults ages 18-64. The cost is $10.
When can I fish?
