Hailstorms, wild springtime weather to hit Colorado this week

Typical of springtime in Colorado, another wild week of weather is on the way, likely bringing with it lightning, winds, hail, and heavy rain to parts of the state over the next five days.

Monday’s forecast includes possible dime-sized hail, wind gusts to 50 mph, frequent lightning, and heavy rainfall over the I-25 corridor and eastern plains. Storms will likely develop over the mountains midday before spreading into the adjacent plains and valleys by mid-to-late Monday afternoon and evening.

Counties impacted include Lake, Chaffee, Saguache, Fremont, Teller, El Paso, Monument, Pueblo, Adams, Las Animas, Crowley, Jackson, Summit, Grand, Boulder, Denver, Gilpin, Clear, Otero, Kiowa, Bent, Prowers, and Baca.

The following mountains may also be impacted: The San Juans, La Garita, Northern Sangre De Cristo, and the Southern Sawatch Range. Flash flooding, including the old burn scars over the San Juan mountains, may also occur in the afternoon or early evening.

Editor’s Note: Keep in mind that flash flooding doesn’t just occur in places where it’s raining. Heavy rainfall upstream can cause surprise and rapid flash flood in an area where clear skies are present.

Looking Ahead

The rest of the week will likely be quite stormy, with back-t0-back days of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms expected to continue for each day of the week through Friday in much of Colorado. For the strongest storms each day, the main threats will be winds gusting up to 50 mph, small hail, torrential rain, and frequent cloud to ground lightning. Flash flooding is also possible over the Spring, Decker, Junkins, and Hayden Pass burn scars.

Editor’s Note: All weather statements are subject to change. Always check the weather conditions and mountain forecast before setting out to hike, and be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions.
