A large search is underway for a 66-year-old hiker that has gone missing at Colorado National Monument near Grand Junction.

According to the official release, the search for Jim Fuchs, of Grand Junction, first began on Thursday evening after a concerned friend found a note left on the missing hiker’s vehicle indicating plans for exploring the monument on Monday. His vehicle was located at the Lower Serpents Trail parking lot, just inside the east entrance to the monument.

Fuchs hasn’t been seen since. He is described as a 66-year-old white male, standing 5′ 10″, and weighing about 175 pounds.

Over a dozen search and rescue volunteers, aided by the National Park Service, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, and Mesa County Search and Rescue Ground Team, hiked through miles of canyons on Friday morning searching the south-east side of the monument for any signs of the missing hiker. A specially licensed drone equipped with thermal imaging and cameras was also used in the search.

Anyone hiking along the trails or backcountry from the Devil’s Kitchen or Lower Serpents parking lots over the last four days who remembers seeing Fuchs or has any other information regarding his whereabouts is asked to contact park officials at 970-250-0805.

Colorado National Monument is located on the Western Slope near the town of Grand Junction. The park encompasses more than 20,000 acres of canyons and unique rock formations.
