Denver’s Ruth Bader Ginsburg celebrations conclude with Tuesday ceremony

Three days of celebrations conclude Tuesday with a public ceremony at Denver’s History Colorado Center to honor the memory of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

The commemoration ceremony, beginning at 11:30 a.m., includes poetry recitation, remarks from community leaders and bell tolling from the Denver City and County Building.

Presenters include Rabbi Rachel Kobrin, Colorado Supreme Court Justice Melissa Hart, 2020 Governor’s Citizenship Medal Recipient Polly Baca and Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, a former law clerk for Ginsburg.

“Justice Ginsburg changed my life,” Weiser said in a statement, “teaching me about equal justice under the law and what outstanding legal work looks like—an important life-long lesson.”

“For millions around the world, her memory will continue to be a blessing.”

Ginsburg’s first gender-discrimination suit took place in Denver’s 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in 1972.

Ginsburg winning the case, Moritz v. Commissioner of Internal Revenue, set a landmark precedent, ruling that discrimination on the basis of sex constitutes a violation of the Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause.

History Colorado Center’s commemoration events for Ginsburg began Sunday with a community mural project on 12th Avenue between Broadway and Lincoln Street, led by Denver artist Adri Norris.

Colorado lawmakers organized a memorial vigil to mourn Ginsburg at Denver’s City Park on Sept. 18. A pair of New York artists also painted a mural of Ginsburg in downtown Denver at 2150 Market St.

The History Colorado Center commemoration is supported by funding from former Lt. Gov. Donna Lynne and the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation.

The ceremony will be live-streamed at facebook.com/historycolorado. In-person attendees are asked to wear masks and maintain six-foot social distancing at all times.
