CPW cancels public fish salvage in Greeley

Officials from the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Wednesday announced the end of emergency public fishing salvage at Poudre Ponds in Greeley.

The salvage was enacted on Aug. 26, as the city prepared to drain the pond in order to repair its intake pump. Poudre Ponds is near the intersection of O Street and North 35th Avenue, just a few miles north of downtown Greeley.

The salvage was cancelled in response to the City of Greeley restricting public access to the pond while the emergency work continues, according to the newsrelease.

Poudre Ponds has been stocked with trout, as well as being the home to largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, black crappie, rainbow trout, common carp and gizzard shad, said Jason Clay, the public information officer for the northeast region of CPW in an email statement.

CPW will attempt to catch the remaining fish in the water and move them to other water sources, according to the release.

Once the work is done, and the pond is refilled, CPW will work to bring back the fish population within Poudre Ponds.

“(Once) we get water back in the pond next spring we will work to rebuild the fishery immediately,” said Brandon Muller, an assistant area wildlife manager in the release.
