CalWood fire evacuations extend to Lyons Park Estates
The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office ordered a mandatory evacuation of residents in the Lyons Park Estates for the CalWood fire on Wednesday afternoon in response to overnight weather predictions.
The evacuation order takes effect at 2 p.m.
Officials said the evacuation is a result of recent CalWood fire activity and forecasted overnight winds.
“The current evacuations we’re implementing for part of Lyons is simply based on an overabundance of caution,” said Seth McKinney, fire management officer for the sheriff’s office. “We want to be ahead of the game and make sure people are safe.”
Deputies were going door-to-door to inform all Lyons Park Estates residents of the evacuation.
Residents are asked to go east on Highway 66 to North 75th Street, turn south and take Highway 119 into Boulder. Highway 36 is closed between North St. Vrain and South Nebo.
Lyons is not under an evacuation order but remains under an evacuation warning.
Officials ask residents to consider any winterization they need to complete before evacuating because of potential incoming winter weather.
Around 234 residents in 104 housing units are being evacuated from Lyons Park Estates.
Previously, approximately 3,000 people had been evacuated as a result of the CalWood fire. At least 26 houses have been destroyed.
The CalWood fire began Saturday, quickly growing to 9,915 acres as of Wednesday morning. The fire is 21% contained.
A red flag warning is in effect from noon Wednesday until 8 a.m. Thursday as a result of high winds and low humidity.
