Denver Parks & Rec close all mountain parks in Clear Creek County
The Denver Parks and Recreation department is temporarily closing the city’s mountain parks in Clear Creek County, in response to the fires that have engulfed the state.
“Due to continuing high fire danger and the closure of National Forest System lands in Clear Creek County and surrounding areas … all Denver Mountain Parks properties located in Clear Creek County are closed,” officials said in a release Wednesday evening.
The parks affected include Echo Lake, Summit Lake, Hicks Mountain, Pence Mountain, Snyder Mountain and Beaver Brook Trail at Genesee Park in Jefferson County.
The announcement comes after a weekend that saw portions of Colorado become engulfed in flames while the Cameron Peak fire — the largest in the state’s history — continued to expand.
The Williams Fork fire, which is closet to Clear Creek County, started last Friday and has grown to 14,670 acres as of 6 p.m. Wednesday, according to the fires information system.
The CalWood and Lefthand Canyon fires also began over the weekend in Boulder County and have stretched 9,854 acres and 459 acres respectively.
Because of the ongoing fires, most National Forest land in Clear Creek, Jefferson, Gilpin, Boulder and Larimer counties have been closed. They will be reevaluated daily as the conditions change.
Officials from Denver Parks and Recreation department urge everyone to exercise caution and practice fire safety in dry areas.
