Denver police officer hits machete-wielding suspect with patrol car

An officer used a patrol car to strike a person holding a machete Thursday morning, the Denver Police Department announced.

Police said they received a report of a person armed with a machete about 5 a.m. in the 10900 block of East Smith Road in Denver’s Central Park neighborhood.

When officers made contact, the suspect advanced toward officers who were outside of the vehicle in a “threatening manner,” police said.

An officer inside the patrol car then struck the suspect to disarm them and take them into custody.

Police said the suspect suffered a serious leg injury. The suspect’s current status is unknown.

The officer who struck the suspect is being placed on routine administrative leave. Police said the investigation is ongoing.

The identities of the suspect and officer have not yet been released.
