The landlord of a Fort Morgan trailer park sent a letter to tenants threatening to raise their rent if Joe Biden wins the presidential election, residents said.

Multiple residents have posted photos of the letter to social media, calling the act voter suppression.

The letter reads, “Please understand IF Joe Biden is elected as our next President, everything you do and have to pay for will change completely.” It goes on to say prices of things like taxes and groceries would raise.

The letter then threatens the tenants, saying, “This also means YOUR RENT will be increased to cover these expenses. Most likely, rent would DOUBLE in price! IF the current President is re-elected, WE WILL NOT RAISE THE RENT FOR AT LEAST 2 YEARS!

“Voting is your choice and we are not telling you how to vote. We are just informing our tenants what WE will do according to the election results,” it said. “If Trump wins, we all win. If Biden wins, we all lose.”

The letter was dated Oct. 19 and signed by the landlord Bernie Pagel.

The Colorado Secretary of State’s office said it has received a complaint about the letter and passed it along to the attorney general.

The Attorney General’s Office said it cannot comment on existing investigations.

The letter has many of the trailer park’s residents afraid and upset.

Cindy Marquez has been a tenant of the park for 20 years and has never experienced anything like this from Pagel before.

“I mean everybody was pretty shocked, honestly,” Marquez said. “It was mainly hurtful, you know? How could someone say something like that or basically threaten us according to something that we can’t control?”

Marquez said many people in the trailer park wouldn’t be able to afford an increase in rent.

“Our family lives paycheck to paycheck and right now we barely make things out with what we get,” she said.

Pagel did not respond to requests for comment.
