Denver opens emergency homeless shelter as cold weather hits

The City and County of Denver opened an emergency overflow homeless shelter Thursday to prepare for the cold weather predicted through Monday.

The city-owned facility can accommodate up to 40 people and will remain open until midday Tuesday.

The shelter is open 24 hours and is at 1370 Elati St., blocks from Civic Center Park. The shelter is for women and transgender individuals experiencing homelessness.

As an overflow shelter, guests will be taken from Samaritan House at 2301 Lawrence St. when it is full. Those seeking shelter should first go to Samaritan House.

The facility is operated by Bayaud Enterprises. Referrals come through Catholic Charities.

Men seeking shelter should go to the Lawrence Street Community Center at 2222 Lawrence St. The city provides transportation to different shelters from Lawrence Street.

The Crossroads Shelter at 1901 29th St. is also available to men for walk-up service.
