A GoFundMe page raising money for first responders who lost their homes in the East Troublesome fire has raised nearly $100,000 in less than two days.

The fundraiser was started by Ellie St. Germain, the wife of Seth St. Germain, the assistant fire chief of the Grand Lake Fire Department.

She said when the East Troublesome fire burned through Grand Lake, it took seven homes belonging to first responders who were actively fighting the fire.

“The Grand Lake Fire Department has become a family and this tragedy has hit us right in the heart,” St. Germain said. “Nothing we can say or do will bring their homes back, but what we can do is help get them on their feet and rebuild their future.”

The money will be split among the seven first responders to assist with insurance deductibles, mortgage payments, down payments on new homes or other expenses.

A committee will be formed this week to distribute the funds. The committee will open a bank account with Fire Chief Kevin Ratzmann and Seth St. Germain as the only authorized users so they can allocate the money.

The East Troublesome fire is the second-largest wildfire in Colorado’s history. It has burned 192,560 acres and is at 15% containment.

The East Troublesome fire has destroyed between 300 and 400 houses, officials said Sunday.

The GoFundMe page’s goal is $500,000.
