Man gets 2 years of work release for running over 10-year-old girl in Arvada
Jose Morales-Reyes, 51, was sentenced Friday to two years of jail work release and eight years of probation for a hit-and-run that seriously injured a 10-year-old girl in Arvada.
The District Attorney’s Office asked for a prison sentence.
The hit-and-run happened Nov. 8, 2019, when the victim and her 6-year-old sister were walking home from school.
The two girls were walking on the sidewalk at West 58th Avenue and Carr Street when Morales-Reyes drove over the curb and crashed into the 10-year-old.
The victim suffered two broken legs, a broken arm, a concussion, a laceration on her stomach and a grade four liver laceration. The six-year-old was not injured.
“We are very disappointed in this sentence,” District Attorney Pete Weir said. “This little girl suffered very serious injuries at the hands of Morales-Reyes. Her family deserves a sentence that more justly reflects the impact this has had on their child and family.”
Morales-Reyes was facing a prison sentence of up to nine years.
A jury found Morales-Reyes guilty of leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury, reckless vehicular assault, driving while ability impaired and reckless driving.
