Polis launches fund to help Colorado communities impacted by wildfires
Gov. Jared Polis announced a statewide fund Wednesday that, in partnership with the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, will help communities impacted by recent wildfires.
The fund will help communities to recover by issuing targeted grants that prioritize medium- to long-term recovery efforts among groups most in need.
The fund will, in part, target and support vulnerable populations disproportionately affected by the fires, fill gaps where public resources are unavailable and provide grants to local nonprofits and community groups.
“Colorado communities have been devastated by historic, climate-induced wildfires and this fund will help us swiftly respond, build up reserves throughout the year and more,” Polis said.
Three of the largest wildfires in state history have burned in 2020. The two largest, the Cameron Peak and East Troublesome fires, are currently burning.
Colorado has lost nearly 700,000 acres and hundreds of houses and structures to wildfires this year.
Polis and the Center for Disaster Philanthropy are currently working to raise money for the fund. Google is one of the fund’s earliest major donors.
