Jesus Bernal was sentenced to 96 years in prison for stabbing 43-year-old Brigido Badua to death in 2019, the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office announced Monday.

Bernal was found guilty of second-degree murder and possession of drug paraphernalia by a Jefferson County jury on Aug. 31. He received the maximum prison sentence after being convicted as a habitual offender.

The incident happened on May 30, 2019. Bernal, 37, had met Badua just five days earlier when they were both released from the Adams County Jail at the same time.

Badua was staying with his wife at the Trails End Motel at 9025 W. Colfax Ave. when Bernal showed up at his room.

After a short conversation, Bernal stabbed Badua in the heart with a large hunting knife.

During the trial, Bernal admitted to stabbing Badua and said he’d stolen the knife days earlier and carried it everywhere.

Bernal has six prior felony convictions, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
