Colorado man gets 200-plus years prison after shooting at deputies
A man who shot at Weld County deputies and left one injured in 2018 was sentenced Wednesday to more than 200 years in prison.
Ismeldo Junior Arredono, 43, was sentenced to 208 years in prison after a jury convicted him of 11 separate charges, including first-degree attempted murder of a police officer, after deliberation in October, according to a release from the Weld County District Attorney’s Office.
He was also convicted of five counts of first-degree murder with extreme indifference and four counts of first-degree assault on a police officer in the 19th in the Judicial District Court.
Deputies responded to a call of a domestic disturbance at a home just outside of Greeley city limits on C Street in August 2018.
The caller initially told dispatchers he had a baseball bat, but while deputies were headed to the home, Arredono armed himself with a 12-gauge pump shotgun and forced his family to flee.
Upon the arrival of deputies, Arredono’s wife pleaded with officials to not shoot him as the “shotgun was only loaded with blanks,” according to a media release.
Arredono fired twice, injuring one deputy, before being wounded by deputies.
“One of the officers was physically injured,” said Chief Deputy District Attorney Michael Pirraglia in the media release.
“But, the fact of the matter is, all of these officers were hurt. All of these officers will live with these emotional scars for the rest of their life.”
The injured deputy required emergency surgery and survived.
Judge Thomas Quammen said he hopes the severe sentence sends a message to people.
“This has not only had an impact on law enforcement in our community, but this has even affected law enforcement throughout the country,” said Quammen.
“This is one of the most serious, violent crimes against law enforcement in Weld County that I can recall. If it wasn’t for the extraordinary medical care for the deputy who got shot, this would have been a first-degree murder case.”
