Two arrested in connection to fatal stabbing on New Year’s Eve in Westminster

Two suspects have been charged in the killing of a man who was fatally stabbed while leaving a convenience store in Westminster on New Year’s Eve.

Devon M. Lamaster, 28, and Brett P. Kalina, 28, will be charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder and two counts of aggravated robbery, said officials from the Westminster Police Department.

Authorities have identified a third suspect, described as the “getaway driver,” but information about her is not being released as the department awaits an arrest warrant, officials said.

Westminster police responded to a report of a stabbing at a Circle K at 7584 Sheridan Blvd. just before 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 31.

Authorities say the victim was confronted by two suspects over a $40 “dispute” and was eventually stabbed.

The victim was transported to a nearby medical facility where he was eventually pronounced dead. His name has not been released as of Wednesday evening.

After stabbing the victim, the suspects fled and led investigators on a multi-state manhunt.

Investigators learned that Kalina had fled Colorado and was believed to be in Decatur, Ill., which is around two hours northeast of St. Louis.

With help of local law enforcement in Illinois, authorities were able to apprehend Kalina and recover the vehicle used during the homicide, officials said. He is currently being held in Illinois and awaiting extradition to Adams County.

On Jan. 3, officers received a tip from the victim’s family that they saw one of the suspects walking near 72nd Avenue and Raleigh Street in Westminster.

Authorities positively identified Lamaster and apprehended him without incident. He is currently being held in the Adams County Detention Facility.
