Inmate captured after escaping from Colorado Correctional Facility
An inmate was arrested after escaping from the minimum security Colorado Correctional Facility this week, the Department of Corrections announced.
Officials said the inmate, Michael Goelz, climbed the fence of the facility and walked away on foot on Sunday.
Goelz then approached a civilian’s home and asked for clothes and a blanket, telling them that he was an inmate at the Colorado Correctional Facility.
The civilian gave Goelz clothes and a blanket and then called the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office to report him.
Goelz’s escape apparently went unnoticed by CCC staff until the sheriff’s office contacted the facility about the report.
CCC then conducted an emergency count and found Goelz was unaccounted for.
Shortly after, deputies with the sheriff’s office arrested Goelz 1 1/2 miles from CCC.
Goelz was taken to the Denver Reception and Diagnostic Center where he will be held until he is transferred to a higher custody facility.
The Office of the Inspector General is investigating the escape, which might add additional charges onto Goelz’s sentence.
Goelz was sentenced to four years at CCC on Sept. 29 for drug-related charges.
