Gang member who killed man over $20 sentenced to 40 years in prison
A 28-year-old gang member was sentenced Tuesday to 40 years in prison for fatally shooting a man who was in debt $20 in 2017, the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office said.
Jacob A. Shockey was sentenced in Arapahoe County District Court for second-degree murder in the slaying of Terrence G. Davis, 44, on Aug. 24, 2017.
Shockey was convicted for the murder in October 2019, but his sentencing hearing was delayed several times as a result of COVID-19 restrictions, officials said.
“Justice delayed is not always justice denied,” said District Attorney John Kellner. “In this case, a vicious murderer who callously took the life of another man is going to spend a long time in prison. This does not bring back the victim, but hopefully it brings some measure of relief to his family.”
During the sentencing Davis’ sister pleaded to the judge for the maximum sentence.
“Without any thought or remorse, he viciously murdered my brother,” she said. “I will never be able to forget what that animal has done and what he has taken from my family.”
Aurora police officers responded to a report of a shooting in an alley in the 1400 block between Boston and Chester streets near Colfax Avenue shortly before midnight on Aug. 24, 2017, according to a criminal affidavit.
Upon arrival, officers located three shell casing, blood on the ground and a small bottle of liquor near Davis, who had suffered three gunshot wounds.
Davis was taken to University Hospital in Aurora, but was pronounced dead several hours later, according to the affidavit.
Investigators learned through the course of the investigation that Shockey “was angry” at Davis, who owed him $20 and had threatened him in the past.
After learning Shockey and another man led Davis into the alley and shot him twice in the chest and once in the face, authorities issued a warrant for his arrest in October 2017.
When police went to apprehend Shockey, he was being held at the Denver County jail for a separate charge of attempted murder.
Shockey is known to have a criminal history in Colorado, Nevada and Pennsylvania, according to the affidavit.
