BOLDERBoulder 10K race canceled for second year in a row due to COVID

The famous BOLDERBoulder 10K race has been canceled for the second year in a row due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, officials announced Tuesday.

The annual run is typically held on Memorial Day, ending with a finish line in the University of Colorado Boulder’s Folsom Field. The race attracts around 50,000 participants and 70,000 spectators each year.

“The health and safety of our participants, volunteers and spectators remains our top priority,” said Race Director Cliff Bosley. “Over the past year-plus, we have had almost-daily discussions about our ability to work with our partners to stage the race and get back to running.”

Organizers said the decision was made after consulting with officials from the city of Boulder, Boulder County, CU Boulder and various local health departments.

Bosley said his team put off making the decision for as long as possible to try to determine a way to hold BOLDERBoulder safely.

“The current situation regarding COVID-19, despite promising news about vaccines, made the decision to postpone prudent,” Bosley said. “We are extremely disappointed, and we know every member of the BOLDERBoulder community feels the same way.”

The first BOLDERBoulder run was held in 1979. Since then, it has grown to the fourth-largest running race in the U.S. and seventh-largest in the world.

In addition to the race, BOLDERBoulder also includes live music and entertainment set up throughout city neighborhoods.

“We are disappointed that we again have to cancel this year’s BOLDERBoulder, and we look forward to the day when we can see thousands of runners crossing the finish line again at Folsom Field,” said CU Chancellor Philip DiStefano.

Participants who were registered for BOLDERBoulder will be automatically reregistered for the 2022 race. They may also choose to donate their entry to BOLDERBoulder’s military race program or register for this year’s Bolder on the Run.

Bolder on the Run is an alternative race scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, in which a limited number of participants will run timed 10Ks at five different locations in Denver, Firestone, Broomfield, Loveland and Erie.

Additionally, the fall FORTitude 10K organized by BOLDERBoulder is expected to take place as normal in Fort Collins later this year.

“We recognize the race is not only an annual tradition … but also an important event for the Boulder community,” Bosley said. “It will make it all the better when we return in 2022 stronger than ever.”

BOLDERBoulder is expected to return on Memorial Day in 2022.
