Many closures caused by the Grizzly Creek Fire last August will be lifted beginning Thursday, according to the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service.

Closures currently affecting areas within the White River National Forest including the Jessie Weaver, No Name and Grizzly Creek trails will reopen Thursday.

“We appreciate the public’s patience as we continue to manage the impacts from the largest wildfire in the history of the White River National Forest,” said WRNF Forest Supervisor Scott Fitzwilliams. “We are continuing to work closely with our partners on post-fire recovery and monitoring.”

Additionally, the area south of Coffee Pot Road and boat access to Glenwood Canyon will also resume Thursday.

The closures went into effect following the ignition of the Grizzly Creek Fire on Aug. 10 last year. For the next four months the fire had spread around 33,000 acres until it was considered contained on Dec. 18, officials said.

Officials are currently focusing on long-term recovery efforts that include natural regeneration and monitoring with targeted reseeding and work projects.

Although the area is reopening to the public, officials are advising outdoor enthusiasts to be aware of the tree, rockfall and debris hazards caused by the fire.

Additionally, forest service officials announced the reopening of Hanging Lake Trail on May 1. The popular trail will be open only to those who have reservations and can do so at www.visitglenwood.com beginning Thursday.
