Downtown Denver’s History Colorado Center is launching a new engagement initiative, “Building Denver,” designed to help the city bounce back better following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The oldest museum in Colorado, History Colorado Center’s initiative aims to encourage reflection and community dialogue, asking Denverites to envision a healthier, more inclusive and more equitable city by looking at the past.

“At History Colorado, we believe that public dialogue is the bridge from challenging times to promising times, and that historical context is vital to that transformation,” said Steve Turner, state historic preservation officer.

The initial rollout of “Building Denver” includes an exhibit of photographs and personal histories, pandemic-friendly walking tours and a podcast launching Monday.

The podcast, “Living Denver,” is a four-part series covering four different Denver neighborhoods through the eyes of their residents, available at historycolorado.org/building-denver and everywhere podcasts are found.

The full initiative will feature a slate of exhibits, public programs, partnerships, scholarship and educational connections set to open on May 29.

“’Building Denver’ explores how civic leaders, designers and residents have steadily worked to bring their own visions of Denver to life,” the description reads.

The initiative is centered around its namesake 16-month exhibit, “Building Denver: Visions of the Capital City,” to be held at the History Colorado Center 1200 N. Broadway. The exhibit will run through Aug. 31, 2022.
