A man who reportedly drove off Pikes Peak Highway Tuesday morning is currently hospitalized, according to Colorado Springs police.

The driver’s condition was not known.

Officers responded to a call just before 11 a.m. about a vehicle that had driven off the mountain, officials said. When they arrived to the 6000 block of Pikes Peak Highway, they found an injured man at the scene. He was flown by helicopter to a hospital. Police did not release the man’s name, or the extent of his injuries.

Pikes Peak Highway is a summit-reaching highway on the 14,115-foot Pikes Peak. The mountain route attracts tourists from around the world, stretching 19 miles with more than 100 turns and steep drop-offs.

According to Drive Pikes Peak on Twitter, the mountain road was open 16 of 19 miles at the start of the day on Tuesday. This means that visitors were able to reach a point around the Devil’s Playground feature at about 13,000 feet. It’s unclear if cloudy conditions rolling into the area during the afternoon changed this. Precipitation was in the forecast for the mountain with possible snow.

The grade of the mountain road is steep enough to cause brake issues. Drivers must typically stop to get their brake temperature checked on their descent. It’s also worth noting that the rapid elevation gain can result in symptoms of altitude sickness in some, including dizziness and nausea, among other things.
