Skateboarder killed in multi-car collision identified as CSU wrestler

The skateboarder killed after being hit by multiple cars Wednesday night has been identified as 21-year-old Presiliano Maez, the Larimer County Coroner’s Office announced.

Maez, who went by Pres, was a student and wrestler at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.

According to the university, Maez was an honor student and went 12-5 as a sophomore wrestling for the CSU team in the 2019-20 season. He graduated from Sheridan High School in Englewood.

A GoFundMe has been started to cover Maez’s funeral expenses.

“Pres made a tremendous impact on all those lucky enough to know him and leaves behind many grieving in sorrow and loss for a life tragically cut short,” wrote Michael Encinias, the fundraiser organizer.

The Fort Collins Police Department said the collision happened at about 8:22 p.m. near Constitution Avenue and West Elizabeth Street, less than a mile from CSU and next to the University Village apartment complex.

Police said Maez was skateboarding in the road when he was hit by multiple cars going east on West Elizabeth Street.

Maez was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Maez died from multiple blunt force injuries, the coroner’s office said. The manner of death was declared an accident.

“This is a tragic situation for everyone involved,” said Lt. Mike Trombley. “As the weather begins to get warmer, please remember there are an increased number of vehicles and pedestrians using the roadways and be cognizant of your surroundings.”

Though police initially thought at least one car involved in the collision fled the scene, they now believe all cars and drivers are accounted for. Police closed the hit-and-run portion of the investigation Friday.

The Fort Collins Police Services CRASH (Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling) Team has taken over the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Officer Drew Jurkofsky at 970-416-2224.

Anyone with video surveillance along West Elizabeth Street that captures the flow of traffic or a dash camera and were traveling along West Elizabeth Street around the time of the collision is also asked to contact police.

West Elizabeth Street was closed between Skyline Avenue and Bryan Avenue for nearly six hours while investigators processed the scene.
