A mother was arrested Friday after her 1-year-old daughter died from exposure to cold weather in March, the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office said.
Craig resident Kaylee Messerly, 36, was arrested on charges of child abuse resulting in death and child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury.
Deputies said the incident happened on the morning of March 11. About 8 a.m., the sheriff’s office got a report of a suspicious vehicle near County Road 54, an area not frequently traveled during the winter.
Responding deputies found the vehicle on a service road, empty and apparently stuck in the mud and snow.
Deputies began searching the surrounding area with help from the Moffat County Search and Rescue Team and aerial resources from Mountain Air Spray.
Messerly and her two young daughters were found about one mile from the car. Messerly and the 3-year-old daughter were alive, suffering from environmental exposure. The 1-year-old daughter was dead nearby.
Messerly and the 3-year-old were taken to hospitals for treatment. The 3-year-old was flown to Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora that night.
Messerly is being held at the Moffat County Jail awaiting trial.
The sheriff’s office did not say what led to Messerly and her daughters being stuck or why they left the car.
According to public records, Messerly was arrested for DUI and flight to avoid persecution in Weld County in 2015. In Tulare, California, Messerly was charged with possessing and using controlled substances three times from 2005 to 2012.
