Denver city and county employees got a brief scare Thursday afternoon when nearby gunshots resulted in a lockdown and a message telling them to get inside.
All city and county buildings in the downtown core area were placed on a secure posture for around 30 minutes as officials investigated the shots, said Kami Johle, director of administration with the Department of General Services.
According to the Denver Police Department, the shots were fired at around 2:12 p.m. at Bannock Street and West 11th Avenue, about three blocks from Denver Election Division and Denver City Council headquarters.
No one was injured but one car was hit, police said. No arrests have been made and there is no suspect information available at this time.
The secure posture status was lifted for all city and county buildings before 3 p.m. with no ongoing threat detected.
Johle said implementing secure postures is very rare – she hasn’t done it before in the last two years – but it was done Thursday out of an abundance of caution.
“We were unsure what was happening and we just wanted to make sure all of our visitors and city facilities were safe,” Johle said.
Police are investigating the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tipsters can be anonymous and are eligible for a $2,000 reward.
