Interstate 70 at the Eisenhower Tunnel reopened Saturday evening following a four-hour shut down after police received a report of a possible explosive device in a vehicle, said Josh Lewis, a public information officer with Colorado State Patrol.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad unit was dispatched to the interstate shortly after 1 p.m. A caller stated a Kia SUV, headed west, was carrying “an explosive device inside,” Lewis said.

The vehicle was stopped on the west side of the tunnel and the driver is communicating with law enforcement. 

Police are currently trying to determine the relationship between the caller and driver, but believe they are “somehow connected,” Lewis said. 

The westbound lanes were closed about 1:30 p.m. on the east entrance of the tunnel, while the eastbound lanes were closed at Silverthorne about 2 p.m.
