Cyclist killed after being hit by suspected DUI driver in Lakewood

A woman was killed while riding her bicycle Sunday morning after a driver suspected of being under the influence of drugs struck her, the Lakewood Police Department announced.

Police said the woman was riding her bike east in the West Alameda Parkway bike lane about 10 a.m. A man driving a sedan on Alameda drifted into the bike lane and hit her near South Indiana Street.

The woman was taken to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

The victim’s identity will be released by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office after her family has been notified.

The driver stayed at the scene and was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of drugs, police said.

Additional charges for vehicular homicide will be presented to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. Police said speed was not a factor in the crash.

The driver’s identity will not be released at this time, police said.
