Missing at-risk hiker rescued near North Thompson Creek in Pitkin County
An at-risk man was rescued Saturday night after he got separated from his companion and lost during a hike near the North Thompson Creek in Pitkin County.
The hiker, a 33-year-old with a developmental disability, was reported missing at 3:30 p.m., prompting search and rescue teams from the Carbondale Fire Department, Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office and Mountain Rescue Aspen to deploy.
Teams searched the Thompson Creek Campground, Highway 133 and Sustainable Settings Ranch, with the fire department also deploying a drone to assist in the search.
The missing hiker was found along the North Thompson Creek by a Mountain Rescue Aspen team at about 7:30 p.m., the sheriff’s office said.
The hiker was uninjured, though he was tired, hungry and thirsty. The rescue team walked him out of the field, reuniting him with his companions at 8:30 p.m.
The five-hour rescue operation was closed by 9 p.m. No rescuers were injured during the operation.
