The body of a paddleboarder who went missing at Big Soda Lake in Bear Creek Lake Park in Jefferson County on Saturday was recovered overnight,  Colorado Parks and Wildlife said.

An underwater search by West Metro and South Metro Fire Rescue dive teams had been going on for more than two hours before switching the operation into a recovery mission.

In addition to an underwater search, crews utilized sonar and drones for aerial surveillance of the area, said Ronda Scholting, a public information officer for WMFR.

Crews were dispatched at 3 p.m. after receiving a call that a man had fallen into the water while paddleboarding. The callers were onshore at the time and are friends with the man, Scholting said.

The body of the victim was recovered overnight by CPW’s Marine Evidence Recovery Team. The body was discovered using a towfish sonar unit and recovered by a remotely operated vehicle.

The name, age and gender of the victim will be released later by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.

It’s the third drowning at state parks this year after there were 34 in 2020.
