Golden, San Luis receive grants to help improve infrastructure

The Colorado Department of Transportation’s Revitalizing Main Streets program on Friday awarded nearly $150,000 to the City of Golden and the Town of San Luis.

The funds will allow the municipalities to improve local roadways and community infrastructure, while also supporting strong economic activity and public safety. Since the program began, it’s awarded over $22 million dollars to various cities, towns and municipalities across the Centennial State, according to CDOT.

“Each mainstreet across our state is a representation of the town and people that call it home,” said Gov. Jared Polis in a news release. “These grants aren’t just about revitalizing our main streets, but really about supporting an entire local community and economy.”

The City of Golden was awarded approximately $100,000 to assist in its architectural fencing program that prioritizes public health, multimodal use and economic development, according to the release.

The funds will help the city install permanent fencing for outdoor dining along Washington Avenue in downtown that has recently been adopted as a permanent ordinance.

“With CDOT’s support, Golden is reimagining Washington Avenue, our ‘main street,'” said Brandon Narva, acting chair of the downtown development authority.

Additionally, the Town of San Luis was awarded $43,550 to expand the use of side walks and parking spaces on their Main Street by providing covered dining and vendor parklets.

“We are looking forward to using the CDOT Revitalizing Main Streets grant to help kickstart economic development and lead the way to help create a much needed vibrant Main Street business district,” said Susan Sanderford, San Luis Town Manager.

Although the large grants of up to $2 million application period closed on May 14, CDOT is urging communities in need to apply for small grant opportunities of up to $150,000 for multimodal and economic resiliency protest.
