Statewide Memorial Day DUI enforcement period begins Friday
An increased law enforcement presence will be felt along Colorado’s roadways beginning Friday as officials crack down on drunk, impaired driving.
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), Colorado State Patrol (CSP) and 86 local law enforcement agencies will join forces in the Memorial Day DUI enforcement period that begins Friday and lasts through June 1, according to a release from CDOT.
“The choice to drive impaired threatens your life and the lives of those around you,” CSP Chief Matthew Packard said in a release. “Make a plan before the party begins, so you never drive impaired.
Last year, 91 law enforcement agencies participated in the enforcement period and resulted in the arrest of 232 impaired drivers.
Over the last five years, the month with the highest number of fatal crashes due to impaired driving occurred in June, July or August in Colorado. To date, 47 deaths have been associated with impaired driving along the state’s roads, according to the release.
“Driving impaired has always been and will continue to be a potentially life-altering decision, Darrell Lingk, CDOT’s Office of Transportation Safety director said in a release. “We understand everyone’s excitement to reenter public spaces and fulfill summer plans that have been delayed due to COVID-19. … If you plan to drive, plan a safe and sober ride to and from your destination.”
