Denver firefighter charged with sexual exploitation of child dies

A 10-year veteran of the Denver Fire Department charged with sexual exploitation of a child is dead, Douglas County Coroner Jill Romann said Tuesday.

The cause and manner in the death of Eric Trujillo, 39, will be released in three to four weeks after the results of an autopsy, said Romann. The coroner’s office received his body on Saturday.

Trujillo was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of sexually exploiting a child in relation to the possession and distribution of child pornography.

Officials from the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office said investigators believed Trujillo uploaded videos showing children being sexually assaulted. Additionally, investigators believe he might have uploaded the videos while working at the firehouse.

After his arrest, Trujillo was placed on unpaid leave while the claims were investigated internally.

The sheriff’s office began looking into Trujillo after receiving an online tip from the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, which resulted in deputies executing multiple search warrants at the firehouse and Trujillo’s home in Highlands Ranch.

“We send out condolences to the family and the friends of Mr. Trujillo and our thoughts and prayers are with them,” said Greg Pixley, a spokesman for the Denver Fire Department.
