Aurora man suspected of killing his mother arrested, charged

An Aurora man accused of killing his mother was arrested and charged Tuesday, the Aurora Police Department announced.

Police said 39-year-old Ryan Scott Avery was taken into custody without incident and charged with homicide. His case will be processed by the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

This arrest comes days after a statewide manhunt was initiated for Avery after his mother was discovered shot to death in her home Sunday.

Police said Deborah Ann Avery, 70, was shot some time Saturday inside 1620 S. Granby St., in the Willow Park neighborhood. She was found the next morning and identified by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office.

Avery was immediately named as a suspect in the shooting. According to public records, Avery’s last known address is the home where the death took place.

Police said Avery was already wanted on a national warrant for an attempted homicide also committed on Saturday in Elizabeth.

Police have not released any additional details about the homicide or the attempted homicide.

Further details are expected to be released later Tuesday, police said.

Anyone with information about either incident should call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tipsters can be anonymous and are eligible for a $2,000 reward.
