Peña Boulevard to DIA fully reopened after year of construction

Peña Boulevard leading to Denver International Airport fully reopened Tuesday after a year of construction-related closures, the airport announced.

All five lanes of inbound Peña Boulevard between Jackson Gap Street and the Jeppesen Terminal are open to drivers, featuring new directional signage and two dedicated travel lanes from the Jackson Gap Street on-ramp to improve safety and traffic flow.

“We began this critical work on Peña Boulevard last summer and expedited work to take advantage of the lower passenger volumes,” said DIA CEO Kim Day. “These improvements prepare (DIA) for future growth as we continue to make our way to 80 million annual passengers.”

Day said the airport will also open the new return-to-terminal loop on Jackson Gap Street in the coming weeks, allowing drivers on outbound Peña Boulevard to turn back to the terminal via Jackson Gap Street to simplify the route for traffic returning to the terminal.

Though Peña Boulevard officially reopened Tuesday, some lanes of the road might occasionally be closed overnight for other construction projects, including the installation of new signage and completion of the eeturn-to-terminal route.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, up to three lanes of inbound Peña Boulevard will be closed from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. for sign installation. Additional overnight lane closures are possible through September.

The majority of the DIA’s road construction projects will be completed by mid-August, with minor work continuing through September, the airport said.

The airport’s $30 million construction project aims to improve traffic flow and safety, reduce weaving traffic, replace aging infrastructure, accommodate for future growth and relocate the return-to-terminal route.
