An off-duty Aurora police sergeant was arrested and cited on multiple charges Monday, including a DUI.
Denver police said Wednesday they stopped Sgt. John J. Moreland, 41, a 14-year Aurora Police Department veteran who was cited with obstructing a peace officer, lane usage violation and driving under the influence.
“We will not be commenting on this case until it has been adjudicated in the courts and not until the completion of our Internal Affairs Investigation,” Aurora Police Department Lt. Chris Amsler said in an email statement. Moreland is on paid administrative leave while the court process and internal investigation continues, officials said.
Denver police stopped Moreland in the 4400 block of North Tower Road in Green Valley Ranch after he failed to drive in a single lane, according to a probable cause statement acquired by The Denver Gazette.
Moreland allegedly ran from the scene on foot, but returned a few minutes later. He was immediately arrested upon his return and therefore not offered a field sobriety test, the statement shows. Moreland was offered a chemical blood alcohol test but refused, according to the probable cause statement.
Officers said Moreland displayed several signs of being under the influence, including slurred and mumbled speed, balance swaying, bloodshot and watery eyes, and a strong alcohol odor from his breath, documents show.
Moreland is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 4, according to online court records.
