Traffic stops planned on I-70 mountain corridor for rockfall work
Traffic on the Interstate 70 mountain corridor will be stopped periodically Tuesday while a helicopter works to lift rockfall mesh fencing above the highway, officials said.
The stops are planned between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. near mile marker 236, just east of Dumont, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. Traffic will be stopped in both directions for about 20 minutes at a time.
Though the work is intended to finish Tuesday, it will continue into Wednesday if needed, officials said.
Drivers traveling on the I-70 mountain corridor should expect delays of up to 30 minutes on Tuesday and Wednesday, officials said.
Eastbound I-70 in Brighton to close for two consecutive weekends
The work will put the rockfall mesh fencing materials into place on the slope above the highway. This will stabilize the slope where a rockslide prompted an emergency closure of I-70 the day after Thanksgiving in 2019.
This effort also comes after several mudslides closed I-70 for two weekends in a row at the end of June and beginning of July through Glenwood Canyon, officials said.
