The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man Tuesday on several charges connected to the death of his mother, the office announced.
Deputies said Jeffrey Apprill was the caretaker for his mother, 78-year-old Karen Apprill, who died under his supervision. Jeffrey Apprill allegedly failed to report his mothers death and left her decomposing body in their home for several months, authorities said.
Officials arrested Jeffrey Apprill, 55, on charges of tampering with a dead human body, criminal exploitation of an at-risk person, at-risk negligence resulting in serious bodily injury, caretaker neglect against an at-risk person and concealing a death.
The investigation into the death began on Aug. 28, 2020, when deputies responded to a call for a welfare check on Karen Apprill. Deputies said Jeffrey Apprill had been admitted to a hospital for over a week and no one had heard from Karen Apprill, officials said.
When deputies arrived at the Boulder County home, they discovered Karen Apprill’s decomposing body inside, authorities said. An autopsy concluded Karen Apprill had died seven to 10 months prior to the discovery. Deputies said officials have not been able to determine how she died. However, the autopsy concluded her body had suffered “trauma” before and after her death.
Jeffrey Apprill is being held in the Boulder County Jail awaiting trial.
