DIA power outages cause flight delays, cancellations

Denver International Airport - DIA

A power outage at Denver International Airport Wednesday afternoon caused hundreds of delays, and several cancellations, officials reported.

While DIA officials couldn’t provide an estimate of flights impacted – they encouraged Wednesday travelers to contact their airlines for flight status before leaving for the airport – DIA was leading the nation’s airports on the “Misery Map” at FlightAware.com with 763 delays, and 37 cancellations since 1 p.m..

Phil Washington confirmed as new CEO of Denver International Airport

DIA spokeswoman Mindy Crane said the FAA had issued a ground stop, meaning flights could land, but those that hadn’t left were held. That ground stop order was lifted at about 4:15 p.m. The trains never stopped running.

“Travelers are encouraged to check with their airline for current flight status,” Crane said.

Xcel Energy officials said as of 3:55 p.m., the power had been restored:

“All customers affected by the electric power outage near and at Denver International Airport have been restored. At this time, our crews are on the scene looking into the cause,” according to a spokesperson via email. “We understand the that losing power, especially at a large facility like the airport, is an inconvenience. We appreciate our customers patience as we worked to resolve the issue as quickly and safely as possible.”

NOTE: DIA officials reported at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday “only about 80 flights were impacted out of around 1,700.”

Xcel officials reported Thursday morning the outage was caused by an equipment failure, specifically a faulty cable.
