Broncos GM George Paton completed two trades late Monday night ahead of final cut day, most notably trading wide receiver Trinity Benson to the Lions and acquiring linebacker Jonas Griffith from the 49ers, The Gazette confirmed Tuesday morning.

Benson was likely set to make the Broncos’ roster after they waived Tyrie Cleveland and rookie Seth Williams on Monday evening. Now Benson, who spent last season on Denver’s practice squad, will try to continue his career in Detroit. The Broncos received a 2022 fifth-round pick and seventh-round pick for Benson, while also giving up a 2023 sixth-round pick.

“He was a success story and a lot of credit goes to (receivers coach) Zach Azzanni, who developed this kid,” Paton said of Benson. “Got him out of East Central (Oklahoma), I believe, and came from nowhere and for him to develop into a pro receiver — we had a lot of teams calling on him. I think it’s a great story and a lot of credit goes to Trinity. Another great person. He was down the depth chart here because we are talented there and so it was a credit to him that teams were calling and we just thought it was a win-win for us to get value, a win for Trinity and really a win for the Detroit Lions. Excited for him, he’s a great person and he’s going to do well in Detroit.”

Griffith comes to Denver as a special teams player, having spent one year on San Francisco’s practice squad. Griffith and a 2022 seventh-round pick were acquired for a 2022 sixth-round pick and 2023 seventh-round pick.

“What really stood out from him, watching the preseason tape, was he’s a special teams player. This kid is 6-foot-3, he can run, he can fly. He’s really going to help our special teams and I think we need help on special teams from last year and really in training camp. Probably not good enough. So this guy’s going to add, he’s going to help us and we’re excited to get him.”
