Jacob Blake’s mother not ‘surprised’ by outcome of Rittenhouse trial
Jacob Blake‘s mother said she “wasn’t really surprised” with the outcome of the Kyle Rittenhouse trial.
Julia Jackson’s faith got her through her son’s injury after police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, shot him in August 2020. The shooting led to protests and riots, including the one in Kenosha where then–17-year-old Rittenhouse shot and killed two rioters and wounded a third. Rittenhouse was found not guilty on all charges Friday.
“I wasn’t really surprised, but it didn’t affect me either way,” she said in an interview Monday alongside her priest, Pastor James Ward. “I just stand on my principles and my faith.”

While Jackson has “respect” for the affected parties, she said there are no winners in these cases.
“I have respect for everybody who has been affected — who has lost loved ones. My heart goes out to everybody involved,” she said. “Nobody wins in these situations, but I see it on the spiritual level and not just on a human level. I see a world that is falling. I see a world that has forgotten about God. I see a world that has forgotten about humanity and that puts human rights or constitutional rights above human life and morals.”
Police shot Blake on Aug. 23, 2020, after he refused to comply during an arrest when he was allegedly near a knife. He was shot seven times, leaving him paralyzed.
Police were responding to a domestic disturbance call in his neighborhood. No charges were held against Rusten Sheskey, the officer who shot Blake, a court ruled in January.
“It’s just not right to take someone’s life because you have the right to,” Blake’s mother continued. “Although I don’t hate anyone at all, I pray often for the police officer that shot my son and his family, as I do for Kyle and his family. Hatred and violence is not what we need.”

When asked how her son is handling the news of Rittenhouse’s acquittal, Jackson said she and her son have similar mindsets.
“Jacob is really on the same level as I am,” she said, adding she would let him “speak for himself” when he’s ready.
However, they worry the verdict may encourage people to “arm themselves like Kyle Rittenhouse did.”
Jackson does not get involved with on-the-street activism, she said.
“I don’t get involved with the protesting and the marching,” she said. “I’m not saying it’s not a good thing, but for me, I do my battles on my knees in prayer.”
“I don’t run into a dangerous situation — I’m not a police officer. That’s not my job.”
